There is a 750-mile mountain range described as the "ghost Alps". Why? They are invisible to the naked eye...

Well, not really. They are just buried under miles and miles of snow in Antarctica. A seven-nation team of scientists successfully mapped the mountain range during the 2007-2009 Polar Year expedition. The team used two twin-engined aircraft that were equipped with "ice penetrating radars and magnetometers".

It's called the Gamburtsev Mountain Range. According to National Geographic, this rift may have been created by the breakup of the super-continent Gondwana around 250 million years ago.
